I'm super pleased to be working with my man, Nils from Beats Without Borders, on bringing the one and only Jeremy Sole to town on Feb. 4th. More info on the party is right here

I've been a big fan of his work and his radio show on KCRW for quite some time now. On top of being an amazing talent, Jeremy is one of the nicest guys in the industry. I had the opportunity to DJ with him at Expo's and Phoreyez's night in LA, called "Escapism". A dope party put on by some great friends! It goes down every 4th Saturday at the Blu Monkey on Hollywood Blvd.

The only thing left for me to say about Jeremy is that he never disappoints. I'll let his bio do the rest of the talking:

As a teenager, Sole's loft parties were a culture clash during the birth of Hip Hop and House music. His upbringing was seeped in the rich Chicago history of Blues, Jazz, Disco, Salsa and Soul - and he reveled in that space where they all blend together. His obsession grew to include music from every corner of the world, and in 2001 Sole moved to LA. With a broad musical palette he felt right at home in the spiciest melting pot in the country.

AFRO FUNKÉ. Drawing a loyal crowd weekly for over 8 years, this is his arena for Afrobeat, Latin, Brazilian and other authentic and remixed world rhythms. Hundreds of international guests have joined in, from deejays Rich Medina and Cut Chemist to impromptu jam sessions with Zap Mama and Stevie Wonder.

theLIFT. Partnering with Eric "Wiseacre" Tucker, Sole returns to his underground roots. Monthly, all-night warehouse events with guests the likes of Gilles Peterson and Danny Krivit gracing the stages. What started at his small downtown loft, moved to different undisclosed locations each month, growing to over 1,100 people as LA came together to celebrate their one-year anniversary. theLIFT has been to Miami, NYC, Palm Springs, and now takes place monthly in both San Francisco and LA.

Jeremy has had the honor of sharing the stage and studio with hundreds of his inspirations; Roy Ayers, Ben Harper, Tony Allen, DJ Shadow, Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, Seu Jorge, Antibalas, Fat Freddy's Drop, Parliament, Quantic, Joe Bataan, etc. He was the last DJ to open for Ray Charles, mixed for Sly Stone's birthday party, and was deejaying the California Democratic Party's Election Night event (over 10k in attendance) at the exact moment when Obama officially became the 44th President.

In April 2006 Sole was in the studio producing with Ms. Lauryn Hill. After hearing him mix she asked if he had ever considered getting into radio, "...because this is the music the people need to hear”. Months later KCRW called to ask him that same question, and since then you can hear him Wednesdays 12-3am on 89.9 KCRW.

Sole has done remixes for FEMI KUTI, DAVID BOWIE, THIEVERY CORPORATION, DJ SHADOW, QUANTIC and NATURAL SELF, and remixes for JAZZANOVA, LITTLE DRAGON and (many) more in the works.

JEREMY SOLE'S MUSAICS. A 9-piece live ensemble, including members of The Lions, Quantic Soul Orchestra, Mayer Hawthorne and Build an Ark. Miguel Atwood-Ferguson on violin, and Todd Simon leading the horn section on trumpet. Jeremy is on turntables and guitar - sampling ethnic percussion and sounds from vintage records, writing live arrangements, and juxtaposing it all as musical mosaics, or "Musaics". It's an experimental-yet-steady sound that hybridizes elements of Afrobeat, Cumbia, Spiritual Jazz and dubbed-out dancefloor beats.

On top of being a DJ and promoter with years of experience, Tom is a heavy record collector with an unparalleled plethora of music knowledge. Peep the vids below. DJ Tom Thump has been making his mark on dance floors and patrons of the Club music world from the major music centers of Detroit, Los Angeles, and for the last decade, San Francisco. Tom has the unique ability to assimilate and present the music and mood necessary for virtually any occasion or party. His knowledge of the world of music is both deep and wide, his skills allowing the musical language speak clearly and powerfully, no matter the genre. Electronica, funk, world, soul and everything in-between.

He was credited in URB Magazine as one of the "Next" 100 and has appeared in several other magazines, news dailies and blogs.
Touring the world Tom has also played gigs in London, Berlin, Budapest, Basel, Montreal, Vancouver, Seattle, New York, Denver, Auckland, Sydney, and Melbourne.

"Labor-Over? Ha, the rebranding of The Do-Over for special occasions has become an infatuation of late. How many “-over” things have been coined? Too many perhaps. This past Labor Day Sunday festivities were definitive of what The Do-Over is all about. Our favorite friends, great crowd, amazing DJ sets, and lots and lots of drinking thanks to the extra encouragement of the holiday on Monday. We don’t hate holiday Mondays one bit!

Kickin’ it off, Mr. Strong handled the two plus opening hours while the shade was the VIP. All the way from Bristol, via Columbia, Ethiopia and so many points between, Quantic provided some next level sounds that were pushing the future and the past all at once. Looking around seeing seasoned DJ’s with hands in the air is something else. One of the coolest dudes from the Bay, J-Boogie, came swinging for the fences and kept it extra sweaty. From NYC, The Rub’s own Eleven was next up and he set the party on fire. Finally, our annual regular from the very very north of Europe, Finland to be exact, Anonymous schooled us all once again. In true Labor day fashion, the party seemed to tick right along in various places throughout LA even after we closed, but some things are better left unmentioned."

Hey folks,

I've been meaning to post this mix up here for a minute now. I finished this mix back towards the end of July. I feel it really represents a bit of everything that I like to play. This mix is almost two and half hours long, an audible journey that touches on every angle of "feel good" music. Expect to hear everything from funk, soul, boogie, breaks, boogaloo, downtempo, disco, dub, hip-hop, house & jazz.

This mix has been getting a lot of love online so far, being championed by some of my own favourite DJ's, such as: DJ Day, J-Boogie, Ohmegga Watts & Dj Expo.

That's right folks, we got the one and only, J-Boogie, touching down in Vancouver to rock with us at W2 Media Cafe on Nov. 18th! This event is in celebration of his new album "Undercover" which dropped a few weeks ago.

His third single from the album, "Magik", dropped today and it features Rashaan Ahamd, Aima The Dreamer & Cait La Dee on the vocals. As an added plus, the single comes with a dope remix from the one and only, The Egyptian Lover! I had the pleasure of hearing the OG and the remix while i was on tour in San Fran. Commemorating the end of Vancouver's Shadow Jugglers radio show which ran for 7 years at CiTR. Beginning with a focus on drum n bass, the show eventually expanded to include a variety of styles and genres.

Rising from the ashes at the same timeslot and station (and most of the same hosts) will be the new Notes From the Underground radio show featuring DJs Socool, Soo, Spilt Milk, and The Funk Hunters.

This mix was originally intended to start a series of Shadow Jugglers mixtapes, but due to the show ending, I have decided to make this the official farewell to the radio show.

So the Homie Brock Boogie sent me over this mix of his from years gone by. Super fresh mix of Canadian hip-hop he recorded back in the day. This totally brought me back to a time where life was a little less complicated and I was more concerned with girls, snowboarding, basketball and blunts...

Here's some info on Brock Boogie as well as the mix:

A veteran DJ of 17 years, Brock Boogie has been surrounded by music
since the day he was born. Brock's love for hip-hop started at the early
age of 6 with his first record purchase - LL Cool J, I Need A Beat. Fast
forward 26 years and his collection is now 5000+ records deep & his
knowledge of music is encyclopedic.

A staple in Toronto's party scene for the past 15 years, Brock Boogie's
sets combine battle-tested turntablist skills with deep crates,
flawlessly moving from one genre to another (usually funk, soul,
brasilian, afro, boogie & classic hip-hop).

Brock also keeps busy in the studio, consistantly brewing up fresh
remixes for his live sets.

~ About the mix - Up North Trip! ~

UP NORTH TRIP!, features 90's Canadian hip-hop tracks hand-picked from
Brock Boogie's collection.

"I had a lot of fun pulling these records & doing this mix. Each of
these tracks had heavy rotation in my walkman when I was a teenager,
growing up in Toronto."

The mix itself is also a throwback to how mix-tapes were done in the
90's: No crazy post-production or multi-track mixing going on here. This
mix was done the old-school way with vinyl, a sampler (for ID hits) and
two turntables...all done in one-take!

Happy Holidays from myself and the rest of the guys! It's been a great year and I wanna give a big shout out to all who came out and supported all of us in one way or another. If it wasn't for you guys our parties wouldn't be half as fun! We are gonna keep on pushing in 2010 to bring you the best parties possible with the best underground music that's out there. I just found this on my old external hard drive. this mix was originally up for download off the old Beat Street website before we switched servers. This mix is from a couple of years ago and it marked my second time on Avi Shack's "These Are The Breaks". I was very stoked to play on his show, it was a huge honor for me to be honest. When I was living on the east coast, I listened to Avi's show every week to stay on top of all the new shit as well as get educated on all the classic breaks and samples too. NICKODEMUS RADIO MIX(NOV. 23/09)

Nickodemus is definitely one of the raddest producers in recent years for me. I'm always curious to see what he's doin' next and his tracks have always been a staple in my record bag for years. I always liked how he fused various ethnic music genres together to rock the dance floor.

He's worked with some major heavyweights such as Quantic, Jay Rodriguez, Zeb as well as Nappy G. Aside from his own production, he's done remix duties for the likes of Nina Simone, Billy Holiday, Thievery Corporation and label mates Pimps of Joytime.

Not only does Nickodemus make dope music but he throws amazing parties as well. His "Turntables On The Hudson" parties are probably the longest running jam in NYC and if you've ever been to one I'm sure you get what I'm talking about. His DJ sets, like his production, are influenced from all angles of the planet. Expect to hear everything from raw funk, hip-hop, dub, samba, latin, afro, callipso or even middle eastern traditional music.

Lately i've really been feeling that filtered disco house sound that has been filling dancefloors across the globe in recent months. I think 2009 has been a great year for electronic music in general but in my opinion, there are more appealing house jams that have dropped in 2009 alone than in countless years past. This track reminds me a bit of the jams DuckSauce (aka: Armand Van Helden and DJ A-Trak)have been dropping and although Dutch producer Rubix doesn't have quite the discography as these two heavyweights this jam is still a dancefloor killer!!!

There have been so many huge tunes that have dropped this year and it has brought new life to some of the genres i've paid little attention to over the past couple years. With that being said, every once in a while i'll come across an older jam that instantly becomes the hottest shit in my crates.

Been meaning to post this for a minute since Avi sent it to me but I've been way too busy(and pretty forgetful....). This is a mix from Avi's radio show THESE ARE THE BREAKS. This just isn't any mix it's his 10 yr Anniversary mix. The show has been going for almost thirteen years now! A lot of heads tune into this show each and every friday from 12-1pm(up until last year he would rock out form 12-2pm!) to hear an assortment of sounds. One week Avi could drop the jazz knowledge on ya where he basically flaunts his record collection, the next week he might drop a "hard to find" disco set on ya or maybe he'll switch it up and drop an 80's hip-hop mix or a full on dub set! That's what makes Avi's show so good, you get the best of the best from all the dope genres!

Not only is Avi a dope DJ and a well known record collector but he also runs one of the dopest independent record shops in all of Canada Beat Street Records. Aside from all this the dude still manages to find time to coach his kids in hockey and soccer too! We usually get him out to spin with us now and again at THE PAYBACK but now that hockey season is in full swing I doubt we'll get him down until next spring. If you ever get to see this guy spin or even DJ with him, it truly is a treat!

I remember not long after I had started working at Beat Street I got a call from this guy one Friday afternoon. He told me he was a limo driver and he had picked up Bill Cosby at the airport. Apparently, Bill Cosby was in town for a show at one of the casinos or some shit. Anyways, the driver stated he had Avi's show on in the limo while he was bringing Cosby to his hotel. Cosby told him to turn off that "jibber-jaberish" that he had on in the limo. I thought it was cool that the driver felt inclined to call so Avi knew he got dissed by BILL FUCKEN COSBY! Funny shit! That being said I lost a lot of respect for Bill Cosby that day and I don't think I watched The Cosby Show since!

I met Wash on-line awhile back. He hit me up cause he had heard one of my mixes on-line. We would chat regularly and talk about tunes and trade tunes. This guy and his crew throw parties all around Brazil and from what I can tell they are the purveyors of the funk/breaks scene down there.

I'm gonna be heading down there in March of 2010 to tour with this guy and I can't wait! The Homie Stickybudz just got back form Brazil touring with Wash and I heard nothing but good things! I can't wait to get down there cause I love Brazilian music and I've always been infatuated with their culture!

Here's what Wash has to say about himself:

DJ Wash, 30 years old started his DJ career in 2002 and has since played shows at countless clubs and festivals all around Brazil and recently did a 3 months tour in Europe

He is involved in several partnerships with labels and producers from around the world and is working towards sharing new kinds of Funk and Breaks music with the public.

He runs two crews in Brazil. Funk the System and Butter Music. The first more into funky breaks and the second with electronic and slippery music.

Living in Sao Paulo. Producing parties, djing and now working as a tour manager.

Fuzzbox Inc are the new kids on the block carving a fresh edge into all that's funky. Pure edit heads, mixing their own flavour into old funk tracks giving them a nu-skool twist.

Fuzzbox Inc are DJs Joe Pope and Colin Moore who between them have enough years behind the decks on the club scene to have reached a mid life crisis. Their style goes from hip hop to funk breaks and anything in between. Nothing has been safe... After doing their own ventures for years in the early days of the rave scene, they got together just over a year ago. With a bag full of edits, they started putting on their own club night in Jersey and it has spanned out from there...

Interest quickly grew with the likes of Ali B & Fort Knox Five asking for their edits, and Fuzzbox were soon asked for mixes for Kiss FM, RTE Ireland, XFM Radio & Rai national radio station in Italy. They have produced over 30 edits of funk tracks that have earned them fans such as A-Skillz, DJ Nu-mark (Jurassic5), Ali B, Fort Knox Five, Tom Middleton, Yoda, Cuban Brothers, Parker and BeatVandals amongst others.

Fuzzbox made their debut at Fabric in Nov last year and Snowbombing 2008 along side the cream of the clubbing scene.

The boys have finished remixes for Kidda (Feel So Good), Fort Knox Five (Papa Was Stoned), Basement Freakz (That's Right), Cuban Brothers (Lights Out), Beat Monkeys feat Uk Hip Hop Act 'TY' (For the People) with many more in the pipeline.

Throughout the year they'll be squeezing in more of their unique edits, a residency @ Ultrafunkula, a tour of Canada, a release on Goodgroove Records and their new soundsystem set with Decks, FX and Samplers getting out and about... oh and breath...
